A Day in the Life of…

Imagine a day in the life at camp. The sun is rising and filtering in, promising a calm and sunny day. The world of nature outside your window is slowly waking up with you and your cabin mates. You can hear the early morning chatter of other cabins waking up. After getting ready for the day, you study your schedule, excited to try all the activities you’ve signed up for. And to make a great start to the day, you and your cabin head to the dining hall for some freshly prepared breakfast. Who wouldn’t want to be at camp if this was just what the morning looked like?

At Camp Tuku, you can find all of this and more. We start the day by raising the flag and singing our camp song, helping everyone wake up and start the day with a joyful mood. We all enjoy an amazing breakfast, where there is a little something for everyone. After breakfast, our amazing director Cyd introduces our theme of the day within our mindfulness curriculum. After a fun activity, the campers go to their first two activities of the day, as shown on their schedule. These activities are specifically chosen by the campers before they come to camp, so it’s something they’ve been looking forward to for a while.  “Camp Tuku is a place where everyone can be themselves and hopefully experience a sense of belonging and community.” describes Bayla, the director of culinary arts, where campers have a chance to learn about new cultures and eat amazing food that they helped cook themselves.

Speaking of amazing food, next comes lunch, where another amazing meal is served for campers, and where they are encouraged to try new things. After some general announcements, we remind the campers of their chances to win Molly the mop and Benny the broom, a healthy competition of cleanliness between cabins. They have a chance to clean up their cabins after lunch, during an hour of relaxation, or a time to rest and take a break from the back-to-back fun. Afterwards, there are two more activities for the campers to enjoy, before our afternoon mindfulness led by the campers’ counselors.

After enjoying some dinner, there is some time to freshen up and prepare for the evening activity, which is always so fun as well as inclusive of all cabin ages. When that wraps up, all cabins head back to their bunks and get ready for the night, preparing for a good night’s sleep. After all, there is a whole weeks’ full of activities to be well rested for. “Camp Tuku is my family and my home. It’s where I can be my true self,” expresses one of our return counselors, Chloe.

There are lots of things to do at Camp Tuku, and many ways to be prepared for the coming summer. On our Camp Tuku website, you can find our camp packing list of recommended items to bring to camp in order to enjoy the full experience, and hopefully avoid a killer sunburn. With enrollment bumping up to 70% capacity, there is still time to slide in and make this a summer to remember at our new location at Rimrock, Arizona. With an amazing staff and great resources throughout the summer, not to mention a great amount of returning campers, Camp Tuku is the perfect place to reconnect with nature this summer and make some new memories.
