Making Connections, Not TikToks

At Camp Tuku, something special happens the moment campers arrive. They leave their phones behind, and turn their attention to a new connection within our camp community. The world outside of camp refuses to slow down, but Camp Tuku provides a bubble of sorts, where the next social update from Instagram or TikTok is not looked at, or even thought about for the next week.

Our return counselor, Lilia, shares her favorite part of coming back every summer. “Camp Tuku is all about friendship and community, tied together with old-fashioned fun. I love being able to disconnect from my phone and connect with my friends.” Without the constant distraction of notifications from the outside world, campers are able to step away from screens and explore the many different opportunities camp has to offer, such as learning how mindfulness can help center oneself and provide a better understanding of their own emotional depth.

Being a no-tech camp is not just about removing devices, it’s about creating space for something better to grow. When screens are out of the picture, conversations naturally become richer and more authentic. Campers make eye contact, listen more closely, and learn to navigate friendships in real time. They build trust through shared experiences, laughing during group games, working together to solve challenges, or simply sitting side by side at the end of a long day.

Of course, we all know how much our campers love to move, explore, and spend time outdoors, and there are plenty of opportunities for that. “The outsideness of it all has to be my favorite activity at camp, from hiking to swimming to yoga,” said our counselor, Lilia.  Building a community within the Tuku family is one of our biggest goals, especially within our activities. Fostering skills such as sportsmanship and teamwork, we show campers how to bring these skills to life while also having a blast!

One of the most powerful outcomes of this unplugged experience is the way it strengthens relationships. At Camp Tuku, friendships are not built through screens, as is so common these days. They are built through shared moments. Campers learn how to communicate face to face, resolve conflicts, and support one another. These are skills that extend far beyond camp and become valuable tools in everyday life and in every relationship outside of camp.

By removing technology, Camp Tuku makes it easier for campers to be mindful without even realizing it. They become more aware of their surroundings, their emotions, and the people around them. They learn to slow down, to reflect, and to appreciate the present moment, skills that are increasingly rare in today’s fast paced, screen driven world.

The benefits of this experience often extend beyond the camp session itself. Campers return home with a renewed sense of confidence, stronger social skills, and a deeper appreciation for time spent offline. Many find that they carry these habits with them, choosing to unplug more often and spend more time outdoors, connecting with nature and the people around them.

Our camp is the place to be this summer, and enrollment is still open for the Summer of 2026! Having relocated to Rimrock Arizona, this upcoming season promises to be an exciting new chapter for both new and returning campers alike. With a fresh setting and the same strong sense of community, Camp Tuku continues to offer an experience that is both fun and deeply meaningful.
